The Barbican and Spitalfields

Project type

Photographs

Date

March 2025

Location

London

This photographic series explores two distinct architectural atmospheres within London: the sculptural weight of the Barbican’s brutalism and the historical texture of Spitalfields’ winding streets. Juxtaposing concrete monoliths with weathered brick and iron storefronts, the project captures a city in tonal contrast—one half a monument to utopian urban design, the other a cradle of market culture and Victorian grit.

Shot on the Fujifilm X-H2 with a combination of 50mm F2 prime, 10–45mm f/3.5–5.6, and 55–200mm f/3.5–4.8 lenses, each composition was carefully selected to frame geometry and light as architectural language. At the Barbican, sharp angles and deep shadows emphasize form and repetition, while long focal lengths compress the layered silhouettes into graphic abstraction. In Spitalfields, the approach shifts—wide perspectives bring breathing room to narrow alleys, and the muted natural lighting preserves the moodiness of quiet morning walks.
